The Saint Louis Police Department 38 Police Revolver was manafactured by
Smith and Wesson .
The 38 Police Revolver was the standard service cartridge of most police departments
in the United States from the 1920s to the early 1990s .
The Smith & Wesson Police Revolver is the most successful handgun of all time .
It is not the most powerful or the most accurate revolver .
In fact it may not be the best gun for most uses but the genius of it is in its versatility .
The Saint Louis Police Department phased out the 38 Police Revolver in the 1990s .
In 1990 the first use of the 9mm semi-automatic pistols were issued as weapons for
Saint Louis Police Officers .
On June 22, 1886 the .38 caliber double action Colt revolver was selected as the regulation weapon .
On September 19, 1899 the .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver was selected as the regulation weapon .
On October 31, 1899 Saint Louis Police Officers were allowed to wear their outside of the uniform in a holster .
